The museum was founded in 1956. For
close to half a century, its mission has been to discover,
research, preserve and popularize the rich cultural
and historical legacy of the people of Batak. The
museum today, with its extensive archives and exhibitions
is a cultural and educational center, reflecting the
individual character, intellectual potential and the
popular cultural and historical riches of Batak.
The museum is supported by the Municipality.
The character and profile of the museum is primarily
historical, with the following departments:
- Archeology
- The Bulgarian Lands from the 15th to the 19th Centuries
- Ethnography
- Modern History
- Connections with the Public
Batak is famous throughout Bulgaria
and the world for the heroism of its citizens during
the April Uprising of 1876. The museum complex, situated
in the center of Batak, displays the history of this
area from many points of view. It introduces the manner
in which people lived, their spirit and their heroic
struggle for freedom and prosperity. Visiting the
museum gives the opportunity to feel the pride of
Bulgarians. This is the quickest way to understand
the history of the area through the centuries.
3. Exhibitions
Historical Museum – The main
exhibition is displayed throughout 450 square
meters. On the main levels are photos, documents
and other original material from the periods
of the Bulgarian national revival, the April
Uprising of 1876 and the Russian-Turkish war
of 1878. On the basement level is a crypt
dedicated to the anti-fascist partisans of
the Second World War.
Historical Church “St. Nedelya”
– A national historical monument of culture
(designated in 1977). Built in 1813, history
has transformed this chapel into a sacred
place for all Bulgarians. In the spring of
1876, thousands of local citizens, in search
of freedom, took it upon themselves to change
the course of history. Their struggle personifies
the vision of a free and independent Bulgaria.
The rights and freedoms that Bulgarians enjoy
today are irrevocably linked to the events
that took place here during the April Uprising.
This holy place is a symbol of the national
struggle for freedom. Today, the historical
church “St. Nedelya” is one of the most visited
monuments in the country.
Balinova House – An architectural
and historical monument of culture (designated
in 1968), designed in the traditional Batak
style. The house contains an ethnographic
exhibition that portrays the lifestyle and
culture of Batak during the late 19th and
early 20th centuries.
Sharova House
– the Museum Gallery.
