| Forest Station “Shiroka Ployana” | |||
|
It is almost hard to believe that only 190 kilometers from Sofia, traveling on the “Trakiya” highway and then on the first class road through Pazardjik, Peshtera and Batak, that you can arrive at this new world of such unique sights, smells and quietude. The forest station is located in the western part of Bulgaria’s most beautiful mountain range, the Rhodopis. The territory of the station encompasses the entire watershed of the rivers “Longurliska” and “Katrandji Dere” and a large part of the “Devin” River watershed. These rivers, along with the reservoirs “Shiroka Polyana,” “Gergana,” “Genevra,” and “Levski,” offer perfect conditions for fishing, eco-tourism, photography and hunting. The area features a short spring season, with a long and cool summer, and a warm fall followed by a long, cold winter with thick blankets of snow. Unforgettable natural landscapes are everywhere – around the reservoirs, in the high mountain meadows blanketed with colorful flowers, and in the centuries old forests of White Pine, Spruce, Fir, and Beech. Those who love walks through the forest will return with as many wild berries and mushrooms as they can carry. You can see the ancient bridge “Kemera” and the remains of an ancient village from Roman times. More than 456 hectares of the station are in the nature preserve “Dupkata,” which is included in UNESCO’s list of the World’s Protected Biospheres. The reserve includes the broad-leafed forests of Beech, Aspen and Hornbeam, and 200 year old stands of White Pine, Spruce and Fir. Some of the most common bushes in the area are hazelnut, juniper, lilac, and many variations of wild berry. Because of the diversity of habitats in the area, there are many grasses and flowers to be found, including the Pirin tea, the white clover, and the yellow primrose. Almost all of the traditional animals of the Rhodopi Mountains inhabit the reserve, but the most prevalent are the wild goats. Animals that inhabit the territory of the station include deer, wild boar, wild goats, bears, foxes and rabbits. Guests of the station can stay in the hunting cabin “Blue Gulf,” on the shores of reservoir “Golyam Beglik.” It features 8 double rooms, each with its own bathroom, a cafe, bar and tavern and offers unforgettable views of the reservoir.
